Mankind has been producing fabrics in one form or another for thousands of years. It is amazing to think that the first woven textiles date back at least 20,000 years. The art of knitting is a mere pup in comparison to its cousin, weaving, as it has only been around a thousand years or so. Would it surprise you however to learn that crochet, is certainly the baby of the family at only a mere two hundred years old or so. It certainly surprised me!

There is a fair amount of mystery about the origins of crochet and it is difficult to pin down the exact moment of its birth. However, the first crochet patterns ever to be produced can be traced back to a Dutch publication in the early nineteenth century.

Crochet was now on the map and it began to grow in popularity among the working classes as a cheap alternative to the very fashionable but exclusive fine laces which were in vogue at that time. At this time it was very much looked down upon by ladies of society as a cheap ‘knockoff’ and was never seen in fashionable circles.

However, this was soon to change as it soon began to become more acceptable among the higher classes, not only as a past time for idle hands but as a fashionable fabric, to replace lace whose industry was becoming disreputable due to bad practices and appalling working conditions. Crochet became a way for society to boycott the lace industry.

In 1846 the Irish potato famine struck, resulting in major economic crisis in Ireland. Humble crochet played a vital part in its recovery, as a method for impoverished women and children to make money. Thus ‘Irish Crochet’ was born and was extremely sought after, being shipped all over the world. This beautiful delicate work was very popular, especially in the States and also gave upper society a chance to indulge their philanthropic sides.

Towards the end of the 19th century crochet had earned a place in the hearts of crafters and had become a legitimate pastime, especially in America. Its popularity did of course wax and wane over the decades: who could forget the influence of crochet in the 60′s and 70′s? Crochet is a remarkably versatile craft, it can be used to make the most delicate lace to chunky sweaters and even objects with structured form such as baby booties. It is still a popular craft today thanks to its versatility and is often seen in its various forms on fashion house cat walks all over the world.

Creating an item using a baby crochet pattern can be very rewarding. However, reading a pattern, especially for a beginner, can be very frustrating. Here are some tips for reading a baby crochet pattern.

Understand the Abbreviations and Symbols

Most patterns use abbreviations or symbols for some of the common terms used in the pattern. If you are not sure what an abbreviation or symbol means, look it up. Some patterns will include an abbreviation list, or you can use a separate guide or an online resource.

Study the Pattern

Make sure that you read the pattern very carefully. Reread it as many times as necessary to make sure you understand exactly what the pattern is asking you to do. If there is a stitch you have not used before, make sure you learn the new stitch and practice it before starting the pattern.

Make Notes

If it is easier for you to understand the pattern without the abbreviations, make notes on the pattern, switching out the abbreviation with the full words. Also, if you are using different color yarn than the pattern calls for, make sure you note that on the pattern when it refers to the color you are replacing.

Check Your Gauge

Most patterns will give you a gauge (x number of stitches = y inches). Make sure that you check your gauge to see if it matches what is called for in the pattern. If it is off, you can tighten or loosen your stitches or switch to a different size needle. You will want to keep your stitch sizing consistent throughout you r project.

Match the Pattern Level to Your Skill Level

If you are still having trouble reading the baby crochet pattern after following these tips, you may be trying to go beyond your current skill level. Check the skill level on the pattern. There are usually four levels: Beginner, Easy (sometimes called Advanced Beginner), Intermediate, and Experienced. If you are just starting out, I would suggest the beginner level. My oldest daughter once asked me, “How did you learn to crochet baby blankets?” I told her that my grandmother had taught me the basics of crochet, such as how to make a chain, single crochet, double crochet, etc. I also told her that another good way is to read books, especially pattern books, to learn more of the difficult stitches. (This was before the days of internet research!)

These days I would suggest that anyone wanting to learn how to crochet baby blankets, or any other crochet items, should go online to watch videos. The reason I suggest videos as opposed to just books is that in the videos you can see how to hold the yarn and hook, as well as any other steps needed to make certain stitches.

I’ve found YouTube to be a great resource in finding these videos. You simply type in “crochet” or “crochet baby blanket” in the search bar and you’ll find lots of how-to videos.

You can also go to Google and type in the words “crochet videos” or “crochet baby blanket videos” to bring up lots of results.

Of course, there are many different patterns for baby blankets and afghans. Each pattern will have different stitches that you’ll need to learn, if you don’t already know how. Most times the patterns will have instructions for the basic stitches and other more advanced stitches. If you’re new to crocheting, I’d suggest starting out with a very basic pattern. I’ve found fairly easy patterns to follow are granny squares or ripples.
